Spring Season
All youth between the ages of 4-17 who reside in, or attend school in, Forsyth, Davie County and portions of Davidson County are eligible to play during the Spring season at Southwest Athletics. All players attend an evaluation session in mid-February in order for managers to assess their skills. The evaluation session is not a tryout. All eligible players will be selected on a team. A draft is then conducted within each division so that managers have an opportunity to select the players for their team. Having the draft done this way by the managers is the best way to ensure that players are playing in the division appropriate with their age and skill level. Once teams are selected, practices will begin in early March. Regular season games are played from early April through early June. Some divisions will have a playoff in June. Games are played during the week and on some Saturdays. The Spring season is about good fun and competition in the older age groups where scores are kept and standings are updated. In the younger age groups, the focus is much more on learning the game, skill development and having fun.
All-Stars
Top players from each age group (not each division) are invited to participate in all-stars to represent Southwest Athletics in a competitive tournament against other Cal Ripken leagues throughout the United States. Players selected for all-stars must be committed to practice much more during this season. Play begins against other Cal Ripken teams in the immediate area and can advance based on performance. All-star tournaments begin in late June and may continue throughout July. Players selected for all-stars pay an additional fee to offset costs for facilities, uniforms and tournament registrations. Southwest Athletics teams traditionally have strong showings in all-star tournaments.
Fall Season
All youth between the ages of 4-17 who reside in, or attend school in, Forsyth and Davie County are eligible to play during the Fall season at Southwest Athletics. All players attend an evaluation session in August in order for managers to assess their skills. The evaluation session is not a tryout. All eligible players will be selected on a team. Players are placed onto teams within a division by either draft or selection. Once teams are selected, practices usually begin in late August. Regular season games are played during the weekdays in August and September. The focus in the Fall season is about player development. Scores and standings are still kept in the older age groups, but the Fall season is usually considered a less competitive environment because there is a wider range of skills within each division. In the younger age groups, the focus is all about learning the game, skill development and having fun.
